The Explorer program
Explorer Post 590 is for young adults, who, along with adult leaders, are registered with The Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It's purpose is to provide experiences to impact on the positive development of youth at a critical stage in their lives and prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

The Post
Explorer Post 590 was founded in late 1993 by Fire Fighter Kyle Thomas. The Post is chartered through SCFPD and its existence depends upon district employees' volunteer participation. The Explorer Post has an adult committee and advisors which make important decisions and coordinate activities and services between SCFPD and Explorer Post 590.
An explorer post is a youth-lead organization through which the program is carried out. The youth officers are elected and activities are planned and implemented based on the resources of the organization, adult committee members, parents, and consultants. Young adults join the Explorer Post to gain an insight in the fire service. The post includes hands-on activities that are challenging, fun-filled, and action-oriented. These activities help youth in developing their life's goals. Each post determines how many regular meetings it will hold in a month.

The BSA and the Sacramento County Fire Protection District have established four specific goals which include:
To gain practical experience in the fire service
To engage in a program of
activities centered on the six experience areas: social interaction, leadership
development, personal fitness, service to the community, outdoor experiences
and on the job observation.
To experience positive leadership
from adults and youth; to be given an opportunity to take on leadership roles.
To have a chance to learn and grow
in a caring environment.
Explorer Post 590 hopes to fulfill these goals with two primary objectives:
To take an in-depth look into the fire service by
learning what is involved in becoming a firefighter through a series of drills,
meetings, lectures, and ride-a-long experiences.
To promote the fire service and
our Explorer Post through community service.

Sacramento County Fire Protection District
The district was formed through a consolidation of the Citrus Heights, North Highlands, Rancho Cordova and Fair Oaks Fire Districts. The district is composed of residential, commercial and industrial areas and is growing rapidly. The district staffs 20 fire stations through 3 battalions, employing approximately 400 personnel. The district encompasses 141.6 square miles with a population of approximately 344,000 and responded to over 21,000 alarms during 1998.
